Interpretation of tongues Gifts of Healing Discerning of Spirits
Definition: a supernatural intervention of nature. A supernatural demonstration of the power of God by which laws of nature are altered suspended or controlled.
Working of miracles is the second of the three gifts of power. Power gifts do something. Remember gift of faith expects a miracle, it receives, it’s passive, it’s a process. Working of miracles does something it works.
1 Cor 12:10 notice "to another working of miracles…"
When you perform a miracle that’s working a miracle
When you receive a miracle you don’t work it
Mark 4:38-39 "and He was in the hinder part of the ship asleep on a pillow and they awake Him and say unto Him master carest thou not that we perish? And he arose and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea peace be still. And the wind ceased and there was a great calm"
Verse 38 is gift of faith – receives
Verse 39 is working of miracles – acts, works
Sometimes the word miracle is used as a figure of speech. This is a miracle drug. This is a miracle of nature. In a general sense all the gifts of the Spirit are miracles but specifically they are not.
The working of miracles is a specific act like Elisha dividing a river with a mantle.
In healing many times miracles are received. This is not Working of Miracles. Those are healing miracles because we serve a miracle working God. Every healing can be called miraculous but it cannot be called "the Working of Miracles"
1 Kings 17:12-16
(13-14) And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. (15) And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. (16) And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah."
1 Kings 13:1-6 Working of Miracles used as a sign.
"And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. (2) And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee. (3) And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. (4) And it came to pass, when King Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.(5) The altar also was rent and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD. (6) And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before."
1 Kings 18:38 Working of Miracles used as a supernatural demonstration of the power of God; is it used as a sign.
"Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench."
2 Kings 4:1-7 The Widows pot of oil kept flowing
"Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen. And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil. (3) Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. (4) And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full. (5) So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out. (6) And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. (7) Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest."
2 Kings 6:5-7 The Ax head swims.
"But as one was felling a beam the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed. (6) And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim. (7) Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it."
2 Kings 2:8 A Law of Nature Altered.
"And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground."
2 Kings 20:9-10 Law of Nature Altered and Used as a sign.
"And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the
LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forth ten
degrees, or go back ten degrees? (10) And Hezekiah answered "It is a light
thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return
backward ten degrees."
Acts 13:8-12 Acts 13:8-12 divine judgment and a sign to others.
"But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. (9) Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, (10) And said, O full of all subtlety and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? (11) And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. (12) Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord."
